Industrial Wood Chipper - Saalasti Chipper H
A horizontal feed biomass chipper for chipping and crushing different types of biomass.
A horizontal feed biomass chipper for chipping and crushing different types of biomass.
The Saalasti Chipper H is designed for high-capacity, stationary use at biomass terminals, power plants, and pellet factories, making it the first of its kind on the market.
Extensive experience and continuous product development with our customers guarantee reliability and durability.
“The Saalasti Chipper H is designed and built to withstand continuous operation, while processing biomass containing stones, impurities and other contaminants. Saalasti Chipper H easily crushes smaller stones along with the other material.”
The Saalasti Chipper H biomass chipper is suitable for power plants, biomass terminals and other high-capacity applications where precise particle size handling and high reliability are essential.
Typical raw materials include logs, bales of dry branches, loose branches, thinnings, and treetops. If you are looking for an industrial wood chipper that performs in a wide range of applications, the Saalasti Chipper H is your choice, thanks to its adjustable particle size and capacity that grows with increasing motor power.
“Besides the typical materials, such as logs, bales of dry branches, loose branches, thinnings, and tree tops, the Saalasti Chipper H is suitable for processing exotic foliage, fossilized wood, and rubber trees as well.”
The Saalasti Chipper H is equipped with our Multitool rotor that makes changing the chipper or crusher knives easy, depending on the material to be processed. This enables the use of a greater variety of materials.
“The value of Saalasti’s Multitool rotor is even greater in the long term, as power plants do not usually use the same raw material throughout their lifetime.”
Thanks to the horizontal feed conveyor, the processed material can be unloaded directly from the trucks to the machine, even from two trucks simultaneously. Depending on the capacity (150–600 loose m3/hour (P63)), three to six loads can be unloaded per hour.
Once the material is loaded onto the feeder, the biomass chipper’s powerful rotor processes it to the desired particle size. The particle size can be optimized to the customer’s needs and easily changed between P32 and P100.
Horizontal chipper helps to raise the capacity of biopower plant
Saalasti delivered a horizontal chipper to Oulun Energia’s Laanila biopower plant in Oulu, Finland. The chipper will have a crucial role, as the CHP plant aims to increase the use of energy wood in producing fuel for a bioenergy plant while reducing the use of fossil fuels.
There are several reasons why a stationary wood chipper is a worthwhile investment, including greater energy and cost-efficiency compared to mobile chippers. Furthermore, Saalasti’s stationary chippers are capable of processing a wide variety of wood biomass, including demanding materials like eucalyptus.
By contrast, the portability and lightweight design of a mobile chipper result in a shorter service life.
In comparison, a mobile chipper often requires more frequent maintenance cycles due to its lightweight design and parts. When maintenance needs arise, Saalasti is your partner of choice for worldwide service and spare parts.
Meanwhile, mobile chippers are often equipped with a high-consumption diesel engine.
Based on the factors above, there are significant differences in the cost of chipping equipment. After taking depreciation into account, the cost of an on-site industrial wood chipper is €0.50 per MWh (megawatt-hour), whereas the cost of a mobile chipper can be as high as €2.20 per MWh.
At Saalasti, our customers always come first. We go to great lengths to build loyal, decades-long partnerships with them.

FAQ about Saalasti Chipper H
The Saalasti Chipper H biomass chipper is designed to withstand stones and other impurities and contaminants. The machine’s powerful rotor crushes smaller stones and other material with ease. If large stones or metal pieces enter the machine, the safety mechanism shuts off the machine so the objects can be removed. This improves safety and prevents damage to the machine.
Our industrial wood chipper is also equipped with metal detectors to help prevent such problems. When the metal detector is activated, the machine shuts off the material feed. Then, reversing the feed conveyor allows the metal to be removed safely.
The lifetime of Saalasti Chipper H biomass chippers is measured in decades. They are designed according to pulp and paper industry standards to withstand the demands of continuous industrial production. Saalasti machines are so robust and long-lived that in some cases, they have outlasted the production facilities where they were originally used. As a result, the industrial wood chippers have been transferred to new production locations.
Yes. The Saalasti Chipper H biomass chipper has a Multitool rotor that can be equipped with crushing or chipping knives depending on the material being processed. The knives can be changed in as little as 45 minutes – if necessary, the machine can easily be converted even daily. Get to know the Saalasti Biomass Crusher.
In addition to common wood-based biomass, the Saalasti Chipper H is also suitable for processing exotic foliage, fossilized wood, and rubber trees. Contact us to find out if the Saalasti Chipper H can handle your material. Our comprehensive testing service continuously tests different materials according to our customers’ specific requirements.
When selecting a heavy-duty wood chipper, it is essential to consider factors that ensure long-term performance, efficiency, and adaptability. A high-capacity chipper should be able to handle varying material types and volume spikes while maintaining reliable output.
Versatility is another key element; the chipper should allow for quick adjustments to blade types, particle sizes, and feed materials without needing extensive modifications. It is also important to ensure compatibility with difficult materials, which can cause issues with less advanced machines.
Energy efficiency contributes both to operational savings and sustainability, particularly when choosing electrically powered stationary models over fuel-driven alternatives.
Additionally, an industrial wood chipper should be user-friendly and safe to operate, with built-in safety mechanisms to protect against damage from foreign objects. Finally, dependable maintenance service and access to OEM spare parts help maximize uptime and ensure continuous operation.
